Over the years, more and more meaningful metrics have been accessible for clients to monitor their SEO performance. However, keyword rankings are still an important factor to consider when optimising for SEO, as choosing the right keywords to target can lead to significant organic traffic.
You don’t want to spam your website with dozens of keywords and negatively impact the customer experience, so how many keywords should you track for SEO?
SEO isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ approach, so the number of keywords you will be tracking will depend.
Keyword Research
In order to find the most relevant keywords to track for your website, you must perform keyword research so you aren’t targeting keywords with no search volume. The best place to start is to look at what you already rank for.
You can do this by heading straight to Google Search Console and analysing what search queries your website has been found for and which keywords led to a click over the past 3 months. With this new found information, you can use these terms to perform further keyword research and add additional keywords to your list.
Landing Pages
Once you have created a target list of keywords you want to optimise your website for, you should assign each keyword or set of keywords to a relevant landing page. If a landing page for this keyword/product/service doesn’t exist, one will need to be created. On average, each landing page will have 1-4 keywords targeted to it, plus any lower search volume variations.
